Starting an Electric Air Compressor

A good air compressor can make jobs like installing trim with a nailer easy. They're great for the do-it-yourselfer, because they can also power tools like wrenches, grinders and paint sprayers. This video will show you the proper startup, operation, and shut down procedure for an electric air compressor.

Instructions

  1. safety goggles1As with all power equipment, always wear safety glasses and closed toe shoes.
  2. checking air compressor on flat surface2Make sure the air compressor is on a flat surface, and check the pump oil level before each use.
  3. connecting hose3Next, connect the air hose to the regulator valve and the power tool to the hose.
  4. off position4Now you are ready to start the air compressor. Make sure the pressure switch lever is in the "OFF" position. Plug the power cord directly into a properly grounded outlet.Use of an extension cord is not recommended as this may cause the motor to overheat. Use an additional air hose instead.
  5. on position and pressure gage5Move the lever on the pressure switch box to the "AUTO ON" position. This will allow the air compressor to start building up pressure in the air tanks until the correct pressure is achieved. When the pressure drops with usage, the air compressor will start automatically in order to build additional pressure.
  6. pressure regulator6Set the pressure to the tool PSI specification by adjusting the pressure regulator knob. Never exceed the pressure recommended by the tool manufacturer.
  7. powering tools with air compressor7This portable 5-gallon electric air compressor makes your jobs easier by supplying the extra power you need to get the job done fast. When you are ready to shut the air compressor down, move the lever on the pressure switch to the "OFF" position, unplug the unit and disconnect the air hose.
  8. draining air8Drain the air from the tanks by releasing air with the pressure relief valve. Once the air tank pressure gauge registers under 10 pounds, open the air tank drain valve under each air tank to drain any moisture.
  9. reset button9Allow the air compressor to cool down. If your air compressor shuts off unexpectedly, this could be due to the use of an extension cord. Turn the pressure switch to the "OFF" position and wait for the motor to cool, then press the reset button located on the motor next to the braided discharge hose. If needed, use an additional air hose to finish up your project.
